For NDIS sole traders and small providers

Know whether the job pays before you say yes.

The hourly rate is only the headline. Job Worth It? counts the travel, admin, vehicle costs, overhead and risk—then tells you to take it, renegotiate it or walk away.

The expensive blind spot

A good hourly rate can still produce a bad job.

Most quick calculators stop at hours multiplied by rate. That is not how the money leaves your business.

01 / TRAVEL

The return trip still costs you

Actual time and kilometres are counted even when the return journey is not claimable.

02 / HIDDEN TIME

Admin time is working time

Case notes, scheduling and follow-up reduce the return from the job whether they appear on an invoice or not.

03 / BUSINESS COST

Your wage is not your total cost

Super, leave, insurance, software, downtime and fixed overhead must be recovered before there is real profit.

A decision system, not a toy calculator

It tells you what must change—not just what went wrong.

Take, renegotiate or decline

A plain-English decision tied to your minimum acceptable margin.

The difference

Built around the decision you actually need to make.

Basic shift calculator

  • Multiplies rate by service hours
  • Assumes a return trip is either entirely claimable or does not exist
  • Ignores fixed overhead and job-specific admin
  • Forgets the job after the page closes
  • Reports a number without a negotiation path

Job Worth It? Pro

  • Measures profit after labour value, on-costs, overhead, vehicle cost and risk
  • Separates actual and claimable outbound and return travel
  • Shows true hourly return and unbillable time
  • Builds a saved monthly opportunity book
  • Calculates the rate or service length needed to make the job work

Questions

Straight answers before you rely on the result.

Does the app decide whether travel is claimable?

No. It applies the travel limits and rates you select, but eligibility depends on the current NDIS pricing arrangements, the support item, employment arrangements and what has been agreed with the participant. The app deliberately keeps actual travel separate from claimable travel.

Are the prices current?

The included standard-support presets are based on the NDIS Pricing Schedule effective 1 July 2026. A custom rate is available because agreements and support items vary. Always check the current official schedule before quoting.

Where is my information stored?

In local browser storage on the device being used. MarginPilot does not receive the job records. Download a backup regularly because clearing browser data can remove them.

Is this financial or claiming advice?

No. It is a business decision aid. It helps expose assumptions and calculate scenarios; it does not validate claims, replace an accountant or determine compliance.

Do I need to enter a participant's full name?

No. Use an internal nickname or reference. The app does not need health information or sensitive participant details.

Before the next yes

Run the job through the numbers that actually matter.

It takes a few minutes. The wrong job can drain margin for months.
